Il Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno - G. F. Händel
The extensive oeuvre of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) is firmly anchored in today’s stage repertoire. Yet we owe this only to the 20th century, when Handel’s works were brought back to the stage from Göttingen. A concept of repertoire as we know it today was largely foreign to artists and audiences of the Baroque period: compositions usually served an occasion - the result is an almost unimaginable abundance of compositions. This is also reflected in Handel’s oeuvre, which includes 42 operas and 25 oratorios. Handel’s first oratorio, "Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno" from 1707, was written in the course of his trip to Italy. It is about the beautiful Belezza and her dispute with Piacere (pleasure), Tempo (time) and Disinganno (knowledge). With its typically slender baroque orchestra and four solo voices alternating between recitatives, arias, duets, and quartets, the oratorio is entirely in the Italian oratorio tradition. The libretto was written by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphilj.

Cecilia Bartoli
Italian mezzo Cecilia Bartoli was born on June 4, 1966 in Rome. Cecilia Bartoli performed for the first time in public at the age of nine. Her career therefore started very early: Cecilia Bartoli was noticed in French and Italian television shows. She made her professional debut at the Verona Arena in 1987. Noticed by Herbert von Karajan and Daniel Barenboim, Cecilia Bartoli performed on the greatest opera stages, Pesaro, San Carlo in Naples, Opéra-Bastille in Paris, Scala in Milan, Festival de Salzburg, particularly brilliant in the characters of Rossini and in the baroque operas. In 2012, Cécilia Bartoli became Artistic Director of the Salzburg Pentecost Festival.

Jedermann - H. v. Hofmannsthal
Probably no other work is as closely associated with the Salzburg Summer Festival as Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s (1874-1929) "Jedermann. Das Spiel vom Sterben des reichen Mannes." Every summer, in good weather, Salzburg’s famous Cathedral Square is transformed into the beautiful backdrop for the play - which can by now look back on nearly 700 performances.  Central issue of the Salzburg Festival classic is the timeless question of death and the afterlife. Even Hugo von Hofmannsthal was aware that dealing with death had increasingly moved to the margins of society. A fact that has become even more acute for today’s generation, although the current pandemic shows us how quickly this can change in public discourse.  As a basis Hofmannsthal used an English play of the 16th century, "Everyman. A Morality Play," as well as various songs from medieval Minnesang. Despite both, classical and medieval references, von Hofmannsthal deliberately created a work free of any time of action.

Das Bergwerk zu Falun - H. v. Hofmannsthal
The drama about the sailor Elis Fröbom was written by the Austrian author Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929). ´Das Bergwerk zu Falun` was published posthumously and celebrated its premiere in Constance in 1949. In this work, too, Hofmannsthal focuses on death. Unlike ´Jedermann` though, it deals with the way a bereaved person deals with the loss of his family, the feelings of guilt and self-doubt that the protagonist is unable to overcome even through a new love.  There is every reason to be excited about the new production planned for the Salzburg Festival in the summer of 2021 - not only will a rather rarely performed work by the co-founder of the Salzburg Festival be brought to the stage; the Swiss Jossi Wieler, whose production of ´Ariadne` was named Performance of the Year in Salzburg exactly 20 years ago, will be responsible as director.
