La Belle au bois dormant - P. I. Tchaïkovski
Like the ballets "Swan Lake" (1876) and "The Nutcracker" (1892), "Sleeping Beauty," which premiered in 1890, was also a commissioned composition and was conceived from the outset as ballet music that could be danced to. With its symphonic, artistically demanding elements, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) placed his ballet music far from a simple "background music" for the stage dancers, but rather - today of course - as a genre on an equal footing with opera and concert. Even if Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake" and "The Nutcracker" are more often in the foreground in the repertoire of the great opera stages, the composer himself considered "Sleeping Beauty" to be one of his best works. Based on the fairy tale "La Belle au bois dormant" by Charles Perrault, the ballet tells the story of the king’s daughter Aurora, whose curse can only be lifted by the kiss of the prince.

Rusalka - A. Dvořák
The lyrical fairy tale "Rusalka" was premiered in Prague in 1901. The touching and idyllic musical work by Antonín Dvořák transports the opera-goer into a colorful, atmospheric-melancholic dream world of timeless beauty and elegance. The vocal soloists find grateful tasks through the catchy and cantabile melodies - Dvořák also finally achieved his breakthrough in the stage dramatic field with his most successful opera. The story of an attempted incarnation fails, even though the mermaid Rusalka is able to take on human form and follow her beloved prince into his kingdom. However, in order to obtain a soul, she must bear the consequence mentioned by the witch Ježibaba: the transformed woman must remain mute. From now on, the prince experiences Rusalka as a stranger and soon succumbs to the seduction of another woman. Nature and human coexistence remain incompatible: as prophesied by Aquarius, Rusalka cannot experience the longingly awaited earthly happiness of love - nor is the prince’s romantic desire for an idealized, free-spirited world of nature fulfilled.

Semyon Bychkov
Conductor Semyon Bychkov is best known for his interpretations of the core repertoire, but has also worked closely with many exceptional contemporary composers such as Luciano Berio, Henri Dutilleux and Maurizio Kagel, and currently with Julian Anderson, among others. He is on the podium of all major opera and concert houses in the USA and Europe. In addition to his position as principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, he holds honorary degrees from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Academy of Music. In 2015, Bychkov was named Conductor of the Year by the International Opera Awards jury. Born in 1952 in what was then Leningrad, Bychkov enjoyed an exceptionally privileged musical education from the age of five, studying piano. He began conducting lessons at the age of 13. Four years later, he was admitted to the Leningrad Conservatory as a student of Ilya Musin. When, after winning the influential Rachmaninoff Conducting Competition, he was denied the prize to conduct the Leningrad Philharmonic because of his political views, Bychkov left the former Soviet Union and emigrated to the United States in 1975. He returned to Europe in the mid-1980s and began his international career, filling in several times for well-known colleagues and conducting orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. In 1997 he became chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and a year later chief conductor of the Dresden Semper Opera.
