Andris Nelsons
Andris Nelsons was born in Riga in 1978. His mother founded one of the first music orchestras in Latvia and his father was conductor cellist. As a youth, Andris Nelsons studied piano and mastered the trumpet by the age of 12. He also sings as a bass baritone for his mother’s orchestra, and is particularly passionate about early music. Andris Nelsons is studying conducting with Alexander Titov in St. Petersburg. He caught the attention of Mariss Jansons when he was urgently called to the post of 1st trumpet of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra while on tour. Jansons becomes his mentor and Andris Nelsons has worked with him in conducting since 2002. In 2003 Andris Nelsons was appointed Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Orchestra and remained in office for four years. His passion for opera led him to conduct large orchestras such as the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra or the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as major events such as the Bayreuth Festival or the New Year’s concert in Vienna.

Piotr Beczala
Born in 1966 in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland, tenor Piotr Beczała’s elegant, yet powerful vocal delivery has thrilled audiences on opera and concert stages around the world. His engagements have taken the opera singer to all the major houses, including Berlin, Munich, Milan, New York, Salzburg, Vienna and Zurich. In the summer of 2018, after only a few weeks of rehearsals, Beczała made his acclaimed debut on the Green Hill at the Bayreuth Festival, where he took over at short notice for Roberto Alagna in the role of Lohengrin. Beczała’s extensive repertoire continues to include the title roles in the operas Werther, Roméo et Juliette, Faust and Les Contes d’Hoffmanns, as well as the roles of Il Duca di Mantova (Rigoletto), Rodolfo (La bohème), Sir Edgardo di Ravenswood (Lucia di Lammermoor), Lenski (Eugene Onegin), Tamino (The Magic Flute), Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) and Alfredo (La traviata). Beczała is one of the leading tenors of our time, performing alongside renowned top orchestras, conductors and notable stage partners, including Placido Domingo, Sir Elliott Gardiner, Fabio Luisi, Riccardo Muti, Christian Thielemann, Diana Damrau as well as Anna Netrebko.
Piotr Beczala,
Bryn Terfel
Making his debut on the greatest opera stages of our time already during the early years of his successful career, which now spans over 25 years, the charismatic Welshman Sir Bryn Terfel has won over audiences and critics alike time and time again. Since then, Terfel has shone in his vocal range of bass-baritone in the title roles of ´Falstaff´, ´Le nozze di Figaro´, ´Don Giovanni´, ´Gianni Schicchi´ or ´Der fliegende Hollaender´, among others, as well as in the roles of Jochanaan (R. Strauss, ´Salome´), Baron Scarpia (G. Puccini, ´Tosca´) and Wotan (R. Wagner, ´Die Walkuere´). Terfel’s professional career has included appearances at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Bavarian State Opera, the Vienna State Opera and the Lucerne Festival, to name just a few of the frequently recurring stops. The opera singer is under contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has released several highly popular recordings. In addition to classical opera aria repertoire, these include folkloristic songs from his homeland as well as Christmas carols. Sir Bryn Terfel has received many international awards and was knighted in 2017 for his services to music.

Rigoletto - G. Verdi
As already in his Luisa Miller, Verdi’s eponymous figure Rigoletto is not a man of rank, but a representative of the people, in this case a malformed court jester. The composer devoted himself with the greatest care to the psychological shaping of his hero. This may have been due to the fact that the Venetian censorship had initially banned the opera for insulting majesty, and that it could only be performed on stage after numerous changes. Since the libretto was changed several times and the scenic structure was also shaken, the unity of the play had to be preserved and restored in other ways. Thus Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) transposed it into the personal, tragic conflict of the Rigoletto, which is decisive for the plot and the connection between the characters. The composer succeeded excellently in combining recitatives, arias and duets into a higher musical unity and in dissolving the old structure of the number opera. He himself even regarded his work as revolutionary. After the music had been criticized as too shallow and superficial by contemporaries, especially by followers of Richard Wagner, only Igor Stravinsky was able to overturn this verdict: He praised the ingenuity of the opera. Today, "Rigoletto" is part of the standard repertoire of every opera house, and the popular arias "La donna è mobile" or "Caro nome", which are extremely demanding to sing, are often performed in song recitals in isolation.
