Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1972, bass-baritone Erwin Schrott is one of the leading Mozart interpreters of our time. In 1998 he won the singing competition "Operalia" and began his international stage career. His leading roles include Don Giovanni, Figaro and Leporello (Don Giovanni) - with which he made his celebrated debut at the Salzburg Summer Festival in 2008. His other repertoire includes the role of Escamillo (Carmen), Dulcamara (L’Elisir d’amore), Procida (Les Vêpres siciliennes), Banquo (Macbeth), Méphistophélès (Faust) and the title role of Attila. In addition to opera productions, Schrott also performs in concert.His performance at Berlin’s Waldbühne in summer 2012 together with (his then partner) Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann caused quite a stir and was broadcast live in 20 countries. Further engagements have taken Schrott to many of the great houses of our time, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera or the London Royal Opera House at Covent Garden or the Bavarian State Opera.

Exception, talent, Wunderkind. These are the first associations when the Finn Klaus Mäkelä (*1996) is described. For hardly any musical profession in the classical music scene is more associated with maturity than that of a conductor. Therefore, Mäkelä’s appearance on the stages of this world turns many things upside down. Young, thoughtful, lively and with an impressive presence, the conductor has dedicated himself to music. At the age of less than 30, he has reached the top of several renowned orchestras: chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, music director of the Orchestre de Paris and future chief conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. Although he will not assume this post until 2027, he is already familiarising himself with the musicians as Artistic Partner. He can also be heard as a guest conductor with the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony and New York Philharmonic.The large footprints of his predecessors – von Karajan, Sir Solti, Barenboim, Järvi and Harding, to name but a few – do not seem to frighten him in any way. Rather, he wants to explore his own experiences and feelings through the music and, equally, to allow the audience to do the same. So Klaus Mäkelä is a conductor who is sure to make a big impact in the future!

Fidelio - L. van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770-1827) only opera “Fidelio” is a lyrical drama in two acts, on whose original score the composer worked between 1803 and 1805. Since the work literally fell through with the audience at its premiere at the Theater an der Wien, and since the revised version (with the changed title “Leonore”) was also only moderately received at the same location, Beethoven rewrote it a third time. Today, this last version is usually performed all over the world.The number opera with spoken dialogues is based on a commission from Peter Freiherr von Braun, who was at that time the director of the Theater an der Wien. Beethoven’s original idea was to adapt a model by Emanuel Schikaneder, “Vestas Feuer”. But ultimately he decided to write a “rescue and liberation opera”, whose genre was very successful in Europe at the end of the 18th and also still at the beginning of the 19th century. Here, Beethoven composed a monument to the principles of political freedom, justice and brotherhood, which are directed against all tyranny, by rescuing an innocent hero from extreme hardship.In more recent times, the opera has been performed on special occasions and has been staged in some cases in an explosive manner. Among other events, the Vienna State Opera, which was bombed in World War II, was symbolically reopened with this production in 1955, expressing Beethoven’s high human ideals and ethical vision.

Making his debut on the greatest opera stages of our time already during the early years of his successful career, which now spans over 25 years, the charismatic Welshman Sir Bryn Terfel has won over audiences and critics alike time and time again. Since then, Terfel has shone in his vocal range of bass-baritone in the title roles of ´Falstaff´, ´Le nozze di Figaro´, ´Don Giovanni´, ´Gianni Schicchi´ or ´Der fliegende Hollaender´, among others, as well as in the roles of Jochanaan (R. Strauss, ´Salome´), Baron Scarpia (G. Puccini, ´Tosca´) and Wotan (R. Wagner, ´Die Walkuere´). Terfel’s professional career has included appearances at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Bavarian State Opera, the Vienna State Opera and the Lucerne Festival, to name just a few of the frequently recurring stops.The opera singer is under contract with Deutsche Grammophon and has released several highly popular recordings. In addition to classical opera aria repertoire, these include folkloristic songs from his homeland as well as Christmas carols. Sir Bryn Terfel has received many international awards and was knighted in 2017 for his services to music.

Engagements take the Westphalian-born bass Georg Zeppenfeld to all the world’s renowned stages, including Bayreuth, London, Milan, Munich, New York, Salzburg and Vienna. In 2015 Zeppenfeld was awarded the title of Kammersänger of the Semperoper Dresden, where he is a regular guest.With his charismatic stage presence, the singer, born in 1970, inspires audiences in major opera productions as well as in concert. His broad role and vocal repertoire includes the parts of Sarastro (The Magic Flute), Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Rocco (Fidelio), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Sparafucile (Rigoletto) and Lodovico (Otello). In addition, Zeppenfeld has celebrated great successes with his Wagner interpretations, including the roles of Veit Pogner and Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Landgraf Herrmann (Tannhäuser), King Heinrich (Lohengrin), King Marke (Tristan) and Daland (Der fliegende Holländer).In the course of his song and concert activities, Zeppenfeld has worked successfully with conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti, Andris Nelsons, Kirill Petrenko, Antonio Pappano, and Christian Thielemann.
