Modena
Ferrari, balsamic vinegar or Luciano Pavarotti - what do you associate with Modena? All of the above are correct, because motor racing, exquisite cuisine and music are the cornerstones of this Emilian city in the Po Valley, which is unfortunately all too often overlooked on the way south.
The magnificent cathedral and Piazza Grande are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while the imposing Palazzo Ducale, the Ghirlandina bell tower and other famous buildings illustrate a picture-perfect Italy. For classical music lovers, the Luciano Pavarotti Home Museum is a must-see – and a visit to the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni is, of course, a must. The two great singers, who often performed together on stage and gave their audiences unforgettable moments of opera, are inextricably linked to their hometown of Modena and are held in high esteem. Take a detour into the charming surrounding countryside, hike along the banks of the Po, marvel at the elegance of Ferrari’s luxury cars in Motor Valley, or taste the fine, dark drops of Balsamico di Modena in one of the numerous acetaia (vinegar cellars). Modena is well worth a visit and will inspire you as much as it inspires us.
