Nicknamed the “Fiery City” for its rich cultural vitality, Liège is the leading tourist destination in Wallonia.

Its historic centre is filled with remarkable sites: the Grand Curtius Museum and its inner courtyards, the Saint Bartholomew’s Church, the Hors-Château street with its listed heritage buildings and hidden alleys, the Montagne de Bueren, the Market Square and the Le Perron, the City Hall and the Prince-Bishops’ Palace. In the former Île district, you can stroll through the pedestrian streets of the Carré, lined with boutiques and filled with a warm atmosphere, before reaching the Saint Paul’s Cathedral and its splendid Gothic cloister.

On 4 November 1820, the Royal Theatre of Liège was inaugurated by King William I of the Netherlands, after being funded through a public subscription. Since then, it has earned a strong reputation and established itself as a major player on the international stage.

The 2026–2027 season, entitled “Powers, Desires”, explores two inseparable forces that run through both operatic history and human passion. From the political power of Macbeth, opening the season in a production by Stefano Poda, to the icy sovereignty of Turandot, which will close the season in a new ending entrusted to Jean-Romain Vesperini.
